Last weekend, the Clinic guys and myself took a little day trip to Brighton to help the fantastic Harriet Bridgwater screenprint the CD covers for our BSM Sampler. Turned out to be an efficient day, we got all 100 done in an hour and a half, and so I snuck off with the tripod to shoot the amazing studio. She shares this space with about 25 other artists and the facilities are all original from the opening in 1976. These are my favourites, but check out the rest here.

Last week I attended the etching workshop led by Lloyd, undoubtedly the most laid-back technician in London. The process will interest those of you who are stubborn traditionalists or classical printmakers. It is a meticulous process, too long to verbalize in a post, but let me tell you it involves KNIVES, ACID AND FIRE.

A brief fixation on Australian local supermarket adverts from the 80s led me to this handful of beauties. I'm particularly struck by the integration of early motion graphics, and the blunt use of typography. Providing stimulus for some moving image I will be working on with Hugh soon. Recently I was sent an email out of the blue by a lovely chap called Derya who works for Woo Magazine. He said that he was putting on a n exhibition in an office / gallery in Emily Carr University, Vancouver, Canada comprising purely of a work found through Flickr favourites, and that he wanted permission to use one of my illustrations in the show. id love to say hoarder but after researching hoarding and those OCD things a few years back i came to realize that i dont really have a problem with uncontrollable compulsive hoarding i merely like to collect thing that i find aesthetically pleasing or something i can use to create art work with.

ve everything categories joseph cornell style but i just cant work that way. there is also the joy in refinding something that you forgot you had while scratching around looking for something else which is always good cause that refound item can lead to a whole new unplanned thing. i guess thats it, if you have everything uber organised and sorted out you lose that freedom and openness, not everything can be categorized and labeled something which looks blue to you today may look a lot more green tomorrow. does that make any sense?

what do your collections mean to you?

tricky one...... i guess my collections kind of make up what and who i am..no that sounds a bit wrong like i would be nothing with out that stuff.....try again.... my collections are important to me because i have created them. i have spent time collecting things that i find important. i find it fascinating how somebody elses junk is my treasure, im taking something which a lot of times would be thrown away and giving it a new life, a regeneration as such. like those bits i sent you a lot of those are just scraps of paper and junk however when they are organised and placed together they become important gain a value.

Hey Bugsby.

I've pondered on my actions over the past week of touring.

collector - a person or thing that collects something, in particular
archivist - a person who maintains and is in charge of archives.
hoarder - a stock or store of money or valued objects, typically one that is secret or carefully guarded

I am an eFactist.
But for the answer to you question with the only above options, I'd say I'm a hoarder to my own sense, yet I archive others's to help construct what my mind is able to perceive.
Order is definitely important to collecting, yet I would counteract this by stating that I can only create any form of order by marginalizing what I'd determine as chaos and disorder, in an act of re-affirming to my self that order of all is on my own hands.
My collections mean everything.

In fact, read the above a pretext. Here we go.
I am a collector of symbols and that is all I can be.

Miss you buddy, I'll be returning from tour next week and will be spending a lot of time with yous to get the December events up running and ready. I have idea for the 15th. It may involve our combined skills though motherfucker.
Would love to have the Lock Tavern prepared and silkscreen posters hanging like bunting around the venue with words of our poetry and others and illustrations. Similar to Hugh's layered 8 and the screenprint you gave me. Perhaps we could use your university resources if you'd fancy?

A quick paper sculpture I made after trying to exlpain graphically the extension and compression of the blades on the shell of the nine-banded armadillo. After making a concertina and taping each end closed, I can increase the curved surface area just by pushing the ends together, which mimics the defence mechanism of the nocturnal insectivore when threatened.

With the project being extremely open with regard to content and outcome, I endeavour to project myself as a collector/archivist. In this way, I felt it necessary to study order/disorder and instantly was attracted to the similarities between collecting and archiving.

The above prototype was following the method of constructing miniature models of some of the items I have collected over the past year or so with a view to collate them in a glass top cabinet as a series of artefacts. This is a comment on the witty archiving of George Maciunas, the founder of the Fluxus movement, who raised general objects to the stature of art, simply by definition.

Realising the outcome of the project would not cater for my need to my disorganised, compulsive nature. By taking the subject of collecting a lot less literally, I decided to compare collecting/archiving to hoarding. Hoardism is often wrongfuly portrayed by the media as a side-effect of laziness (read any Sun article with the words 'slob' and 'hoarding' in the title) when in actual fact, it derives from numerous obsessive-compulsive disorders.

"Some objects he uses are found, some are made by and for the artist. His use of domestic images might suggest an interest in the spatial world of still-life but his interest in the human body’s interaction with space is more connected to architecture. Therrien’s images and the objects he selects expose the hidden drama of the unnoticed, invisible, physical and mental relationships which exist in the world of human beings, between human beings and between the objects they create to help them live their lives. "

This is an installation by the French artist Robert Therrien, which comprises of 888 red objects saved, stacked and stored in a purpose-built room. This almost obsessive nature of this collection warps the viewer's perception of the boundary between archiving and hoarding, challenging their understanding of order/disorder. The act of collecting items to such a compulsive degree was a conscious decision by the artist and so this suggests the process was of much more socio-scientific relevance than the outcome.

This exhibition is questioning the roles of the curator and the artist.

We are detaching ourselves from opinion and hence we are asking young creatives in South East London to respond to our brief by submitting a piece of their work related to the idea of something being ‘founded’ or appropriated.

For example, a collage of found images or a video made of found footage.

We hope to create a tangible exhibition highlighting the new breed of talent south of the river. There are no limitations in style or medium, but obviously we bear in mind there is only one room and there will be a selective process involved, so if you want to reconstruct the cast of Cheers in a block of ice, you might have to reconsider.

What’s exciting about this project is that the contributors have never met each other, and we, the curators, have no idea what the exhibition is going to look like, as the process of us taking and using is completely dependant on what you give.

The opening night for the exhibition is Tuesday 29th September as part of CLINIC PRESENTS at the Amersham Arms. HERE IS THE FLYER. Therefore the deadline for submissions is NEXT FRIDAY, 26TH SEPTEMBER. That gives you nearly two weeks to cut/stick/edit/record, and with 2D work you must bear in mind it will be pinned

Head here to see my latest project, a poetry and art collective with some fine fellows from Goldsmiths and LCC. Rachael, Andrew and Sam formed the poetry alliance in April, and I was invited on board after collaborating with Sam for their very first zine. A month later and photographer Benjamin Thomas became the fifth member of Clinic.

On the 2nd July, Clinic put on their first creative night at the Amersham Arms in New Cross to raise money for Goldsmith plays being taken to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Keep an eye out over the next few weeks, we have big things planned, including a night of live music and poetry at the Amersham Arms. We are delighted to have Shoes And Socks Off playing a live acoustic set, the three poets will be performing a group reading and the exhibition upstairs will be curated by both myself and the superb Benjamin Thomas.

I have my photos from Normandy back. The almost filmic nature of the exposure dimensions gave me license to experiment with snapping in a more metaphorical way; instead of solely relying on the aesthetic qualities of the subject, I was coaxed into thinking more like a director. The fruits of my trip could be imagined loosely as stills from low-budget, experimental films. It now seems like a natural step for me to dip into film, and these photos will have a big impact on the way I think about filming my collaborative short film with my good friend Justine.

So, after many a kitchen-hygiene-related argument, my housemates and I decided that we would develop a rota so that, in addition to the general everyday cleaning, we would FUCK SHIT UP on a weekly basis.

I found my church board and letters, then simultaneously filed them for future use and created the rota.

NORMANDY//

On Monday Hugh and I returned from my family holiday in Normandy, North France. The ferry from Newhaven (where the most frequent sight was various middle-aged men dressed like youth workers picking up dog ends from sewage puddles) took four hours and I managed to spend a tenth of my budget on the gammiest "Full English" breakfast I have ever ingested. We touched down in Dieppe and drove for three hours (with toilet breaks) to Lonlay L'Abbeye, a cute valley village an hour south of Caen. It has a beautiful cathedral, a biscuit factory and a bi-weekly market. The cobbled lanes smelt of wine and cheese, the houses of fine oak and history.

But we weren't staying in Lonlay L'Abbeye. Another five kilometre drive, this time back on ourselves, brought us to La Mare, a settlement of about five farmhouses tucked away atop a hill, surrounded by fields and cows and fields. Despite the remoteness, the gite was beautiful and we kept ourselves amused with long aimless walks and copius units of alcohol (usually in reverse order).

I will divulge further into what we did when i get my photos back and inevitably have my memory jogged, but for now why don't you have a cheeky listen to our podcast-y type things we did. One sober, one drunk, and one tired, all jokes.

10 THINGS TO DO WITH SHIT PHOTOS //

This was a little self-initiated project I did a while ago. After receiving a whole bunch of photos back from being developed, I found that a significant percentage were grey and shit. I literally had about 30 prints that were utterly obsolete.

Being the hoarder that I am, I devised this plan so that I could justify not throwing them away.

Progression on the logo for Dusko's recording studio.

The strokes on top of the red dot have been made more dense, to make the characters more noticeable. Now they're far too Rough Trade-y. I have also moved the text to the right of the symbol to create more of a relationship between the two. The text still needs a bit of work, but I am stuck on the idea of a block of text to contrast the organic nature of the dot.

Nearly there.

Currently working on a logo for Dusko's recording studio with Justine.

We looked at it from a perspective that considers the principles of design, colour, shape and scale.
The red symbol mimics the recording button, and we have carefully considered the main typographic elements of the logo.

As a starting point, using the initials each word (CRS), we have created a logo with regards to using a grid and creating geometric shapes which interact with the shapes already given to us (CRS).

Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe is genius. I've been trawling his back catalogue every night, slugging through all six series of the cynic's reviews. Him being so blunt, to the point of cringing at the accuracy of his strip-downs, means that I can somewhat relate to his showers of abuse aimed at the shallow world of crap television.

Acutely topical and disturbingly angry, Brooker interrupts his sofa onslaught with hilariously scathing caricatures of some of the biggest c**ts on the box. (See above.)

The other week at the CLINIC night at Amersham Arms, photographer Benjamin Thomas and I had a mini exhibition upstairs in the Take Courage Gallery. It was a great evening, headlined by Naseby Fox and Jamie N Commons. We had a good turn out and got everyone upstairs for the poetry readings.

Have You Zine...

A couple of months ago, I saw an advert for workshop event being held by two guys called Zineswap at the Amersham Arms. It was a Saturday morning, a sunny one at that and I left my house with a book on mountains, a scalpel and a cutting mat, and my friend India. I had heard of Zineswap but only because I have some sort of photographic memory and remembered their name from a flyer I picked up in December.

So I turned up on time, complying with one of my better traits, to see the gallery upstairs decked with tables strewn with hundreds of zines. Stapled, handstitched, folded, paperclipped. Black on white, white on black, red on yellow. A4, A5, A6, square. Paper, card, cd, photocopy. A comprehensive library of handmade publications and the epitomy of the resurgence of zine culture.

I approached the spritely blond one, sporting a heavy metal vest and animated limbs and introduced myself. He said his name was Gordon, his deft Brum accent trickling through his teeth. We happily conversed for a good third of an hour, he invited my to stretch my knowledge of the sub-cult.

Soon, the other one, suiting a slightly more sensible stripey tee, dawdled over and was introduced as Rob. He expained to me the birth of Zineswap, and I became increasingly excited to hear about their plans for the day and over the next few months. More workshops, applying for funding among other shit.

The way Zineswap works is: they request people to send in at least three copies of their zines about absolutely anything, then they put one in a library, hold one for the display table for their shows and put the remaining in a box which is taken to shows and are available for swapping with other publishers.

As more South London types began filing through the door, including some fine artists, events promoters and band members, the workshop began. The agenda held true two aspects of the brief; to make a live zine where anyone present could contribute, no matter their artistic lean, and to meet those with like-minds and talk to whoever caught your words. The interactive experiment was a success, a concoction of collage and a fathom of photocopies. Below are some of the double spreads put into the final PDF document (which is available for download from the zineswap website under past events.)

Since meeting these fine fellows, I have kept in contact with them and helped them with a show a few weeks ago at the Albany Theatre in Deptford. They are currently doing the rounds all over London, spreading the Z word and building on their already impressive catalogue of publications, which is only going to grow in direct proportion to their popularity.

I am happy that I can associate myself with such an exciting project, and they have just confirmed that they will be holding their second workshop in the Tate Modern in September. So I suggest you remember the name (not that it's an easy one to forget) and get making.

I'm in an extremely good mood today, because after checking the website of Leeds-based art collective, Kraffhics, I noticed my name just sitting there amongst some of the hottest collage artists of the moment. I'm going to be in a book curated by Leemun Smith! I'm really excited and chuffed that my work was chosen for such a publication, as this gives me the perfect opportunity to show what I can do on a larger scale. Watch this space, and keep checking my blog over the next couple of weeks for fresh work.

UPDATE //

Following my drawings and subsequent digital mock ups of the specimen font, the obvious next step was to introduce another dimension. Using just straws and some ropey string, I recreated the forms looking particularly at geometry and trying to stay true to the observational drawings that began the whole project.

These are indeed simple mock-ups but, jeez, they took a fucking while. The finicky rope-tying was tedious but I think the results will help me to realize the prospect of actually creating the typeface from scaffolding.

I may make a few more of these but I don't want to dwell because it is now important I move onto perspective and perhaps a slightly larger scale.

LIQUIDS RESEARCH

Since Justine and I first thought about making a short film together, we have been putting our heads together to find a subject that is unassumingly mundane but can be transformed into a spectacle that arouses intrigue and beauty. These are a few of the films I have come across in the past few days after playing with a ferrofluid at the Science Museum last week.

Liquids, obviously are ubiquitous, but it is not the aesthetics of these experiments that really have us hooked; it's the unusual physical properties that they hold. For example salt water will not freeze until it makes contact with air and cornstarch paste possesses the appearance of a liquid but the impact of a solid.

Today, I bought cornstarch and began to play with the substance that is known as gloop, and Oobleck, which has been adopted by popular culture from a Dr. Seuss. It is scientifically known as a non-Newtonian fluid, which is an allusion to the ambiguous nature of the substance's viscosity. Oobleck and other 'shear thinckening fluids' are being tested on their effectiveness to stop bullets.

Coming into the final stages of my project now. Following the collages below, i began to three-dimensionalise my ideas. Focusing on the prospect of man exhausting the art of inventing, due to the intense rate at which technology is progressing, I have explored the realms of failed inventions.

Taking a DIY stance, with tongue in cheek, I am employing readymades as the basis for my prototypes. To contextualise them, I will be doing a photoshoot and a catalogue to go in the exhibition. These shots show testing out the figurines that interact with the objects and give them a slightly surreal presence.

Adopting a very hand-made style, I am simultaneously putting the garden shed designers on a pedestal and commenting on the obsolence of these individuals' EUREKA moments.
